There are a lot of painters out there. Some are are better than others; some have lots of talent and no determination, some have determination but no talent. Tommy "Too Much" Martin has both.
I first met Tommy over 10 years ago when he was working at a local hot rod shop. He was doing bodywork and painting that everyone was in awe over. It was rare for a young guy to be that skilled with metal and paint. He did some work a friend of mine's 1953 Mercury that turned out fantastic.![]()
"I learned the basics in custom motorcycle paint and metalwork from my Dad. He owned Fast Freddy's Show and Go body shop in Blue Springs. I started working for him at age 11. My early duties included sweeping the floor and masking off cars. I soon worked my way up to straightening metal and painting. By age 17, I was doing it full time for a living," Tommy says.
Tommy now has over 20 years of experience under his belt. But it hasn't been without struggles. Facing adversity in his life and conquering it have made him a stronger man. His faith in God has also helped.

"I turned my life around and accepted Jesus as my savior in 1999. Since then I have been attending the Disciples of Jesus Ministries in Independence. Reverend Guy Girratono has helped me and my family through some hard times. I am not a perfect Christian, but I try my best everyday of my life," said Tommy.
Tommy's early struggles have given him a new sense of concentration in his work. Many people who knew him before and after feel like he is doing the best work of his career right now. He is currently doing a good amount of painting for Brand X Choppers out of Lenexa, Kansas.

"I am currently working out of my garage at home. If things keep growing like they have been I am going to open another shop and go full time again. I am not really set up to do much metal work currently so I am focusing on custom paint," Tommy says.
Tommy had a unique style of painting. In fact, his flame jobs are known as "Tommy Flames" in the custom motorcycle paint and car world. He credits several other influences in his life in addition to his Dad.
"I learned a lot from Rex Adams with Crazy Paint. Rex passed away recently. The world of custom painting really lost a legend when he died. Love him or hate him, he was a talented guy. I also got a lot of insight and guidance from Jim Grinlinton who does pinstriping and sign painting for a lot of custom car guys."

Tommy also gives Scott Thomas credit for influencing him in the world of motorcycle painting specifically. The time he worked with Scott really made him focus his talent on motorcycles.
Some of Tommy's more famous creations include local radio personality Johnny Dare's pickup truck. He also has done several bikes that have been featured in major magazines. One of his most noted bikes was Eddie Funk's chopper called "Funkin' Bad." It was featured in Street Chopper magazine and also in an Easyriders special insert.

Motorcycle Works in Olathe, Kansas, built another famous bike Tommy painted. It was eventually shipped to Bolivia, South America. Bill Duncan painted the base coat of candy burple then Tommy added his signature flames in yellow, orange and red with blue tips and a blue stripe around them. I am sure the bike caused quite a stir upon arrival in Bolivia!
